Master of Architectural Studies Thesis
Vertical Urbanism – Healing Highrise Isolation

Project Information

Brief

Studies show that people who stay in high-rise buildings experience more isolation and worse mental health as they’re more likely to stay indoors due to the inconvenience to go outside. My thesis aims to respond to this issue by providing a high-rise design solution located in Auckland CBD.

Discover

My design is driven by synthesising secondary research of urban design theories and high-rise manifestos with primary research of Auckland and Barcelona’s urban design. I used my cherished experience of visiting Barcelona as a key case study to inspire and shape the building’s spaces.

Ideate

My central concept is to place continuously connected public spaces through the building that acts as a spine. There are five distinct ‘districts’ throughout the spine, each modelled after a thriving public place in Barcelona. The design harnesses the high user density of high-rises to fuel recreational activities in the spine, which encourages users to engage more in public life.
